We
just got such an innovative shop accessory that it took only about
a minute to test. From the people at Wizard (remember those woodworking
metal detectors) in California. In fact, when the people at Wizard
sent me the press release I couldn’t wait to call them and ask
for samples.
My eyes are as old as I am and like me, don’t quite have the strength
that they used to. I use reading glasses because my arms are not
quite long enough and printers continue to print things in ever
decreasing font sizes. This is bad enough when reading things
like tool manuals but it gets even worse when I try to read those
small lines on a tape measure.
The problem compounds itself when I am in my shop and I have to
keep my reading glasses on and then put a pair of safety glasses
on top of them. I have not yet found a pair of safety glasses
that will comfortably fit on top of them. A quandary, right?

Wizard has come out with (are you ready for this?) bi-focal safety
glasses that they
call ShopSpecs. These are made from a polycarbonate and more like
goggles than glasses. The stem length is adjustable and they wrap
around to give some protection to the temples.
The Bi-focal Safety Glasses from Wizard are available in 100 dioptres
(magnifying strength), 150, 200, 250 and 300 strengths and that
just about covers most of us weak-eyed (read older or more mature)
woodworkers. Whoever said that there are no new inventions worth
making could not read the fine print. Now, they can.
