The Little Wizard Portable Precision Metal Detector

Reviewed by Karen E. Baisch

Every so often, you hear of someone who has chewed up a set of planer blades or scratched the drum of a jointer with some nasty metal shard buried in a board that was fed through it. It's a disappointing thing to have happen. Even so, few people seem to have a metal detector, or stud finder, kicking around the shop. In the past, I have not owned one because I found them to be either prohibitively expensive or not accurate enough to be of much use to me. The Little Wizard metal detector strikes a good balance for the woodworker. Originally created for treasure seekers and the security industry, it is capable of detecting a wide range of metals, even non-ferrous (non-iron-based) ones, and it only costs about $20.

I know certain tool addicts who need little excuse to feed their compulsion. For them, the Little Wizard metal detector will be like a kid finding a delicious new piece of candy in the checkout aisle. It has all the razz-ma-tazz they're looking for. I don't see it that way. To me, the Little Wizard is inexpensive insurance against serious shop damage. It's more than just another technological sugar high. It's good for you, too.

Karen Baisch is a Maine-based woodworker:

Karen found the Little Wizard metal detector for $19.99 at Woodcraft Supply Co., P.O. Box 1686, Parkersburg, WV 26102,. 800-225-1153. <www.woodcraft.com>

It's also available from Eagle America (a tool catalog), 800-872-2511, and from ACE Hardware stores.

If you're planning to use recycled lumber, or harvest your own, you've gotta check it for hidden metal. A submerged nail or screw will ruin a $100 saw blade quicker than you can say "IknewIshouldaspent$20onaLittleWizardmetaldetector!"

This battery-powered unit scans for metal up to 2-1/2 in. below the surface and signals with LED lights and an audible tone when it finds some. The business end is only 2-in. wide, so it takes time to check a board completely. The best way to cover the surface is to establish a grid, working from end to end, first with the grain, then across.
The Little Wizard may not be the fastest metal detector to use, but for the money, it can't be beat.

A metal stud finder that works...
Carl Hagstrom 3/19

Last month, there was a thread that discussed strategies for locating metal studs. I seem to recall that it was suggested that a strong magnet was the best tool for the job. For what it's worth, I just came across a kick butt metal stud finder.

If you get the WOODWEB Update, you'll have read about an upcoming contest where we're going to be giving away a pile of Little Wizard hand held metal detectors. One of my first thoughts when I heard about this tool was how it would do locating metal studs.

Let me tell you, it works great (I've included a photo I took of the Wizard in action). I tested it out on a metal studded wall covered by 1/2 inch drywall - no way you can miss finding the stud. At $19.95, it's a real bargain. We'll be announcing details of the upcoming drawing soon, and if you can't wait, you can always visit the Little Wizard Website for more details (link below). The tool also locates hidden metal in boards, and might save that chop saw blade when your reusing existing baseboard or casings, or planing down a door.

Metal Stud Finder

Finding metal studs behind drywall can be tricky: many conventional stud finders don't "see" them. Made by Wizard Detectors, The Little Wizard handheld metal detector easily finds metal studs and it operates like a conventional stud finder. As the device passes over a stud , it beeps and LED indicators light up. By adjusting the sensitivity guage, you can calibrate the Wizard for a particular wall condition like 5/8-inch drywall or wood paneling. The Little Wizard is also a great tool for scanning used lumber for nails prior to machining. That trim you're reusing on a remodeling job can be quickly scanned so you won't trash a saw blade or a set of jointer knives.

NEW DETECTION TOOLS FOR WOODWORKERS

A new range of special-purpose metal detectors can save woodworkers hundreds of dollars in equipment damage.

Van Nuys, California. There's probably nothing more annoying to a woodworker than damaging a planer, saw or jointer blade. Frequently small metal objects such as staples, nails, screws or even bullets can be hidden inside new or recycled wood. Undetected, these metal culprits often cause costly planer or jointer blade damage, or worse still, they can cause injury to woodworkers.

Wizard Distribution is proud to announce three new tools to help prevent this costly blade damage and personal injury. Wizard has developed this array of unique precision metal detectors specifically for woodworkers and the woodworking industry.

First in new line up is the Little Wizard hand held metal detector. It is designed to detect metal objects buried up to 1 1/2” deep in wood. It is small, lightweight, and inexpensive. The Little Wizard retails for only $19.95 retail with a wholesale of $10.50. This is such inexpensive insurance that, according to Woodenboat Magazine, “not owning one begins to seem like false economy.”

The hottest new woodworking tool on the market is the new Lumber Wizard, which retails for $99.95 retail with a wholesale of $48.00. This is the most powerful of all metal detectors in its field. The Lumber Wizard is a powerful precision hand-held metal detector utilizing the same technology used in many security detectors commonly used inside airports and prisons. However, the Lumber Wizard departs from other security-type detectors with added features for woodworkers. The Lumber Wizard provides powerful precise detection of small metal objects that can be buried up to 4” inside new or used lumber. It includes a special “vibration alert” allowing easy use in noisy workshops, or by the hearing impaired.

The grand finale to this impressive new line up is the Wood Scan Wizard. This very unique metal detector will be a welcome addition to woodshops everywhere. The Wood Scan Wizard is a special “loop” style metal detector that allows wood and lumber to be passed through its 8" tall by 14" wide scanning loop. Wood or lumber is scanned with powerful detector coils that can penetrate up to 3” thick on all sides of a piece of wood in a single pass. The Wood Scan Wizard can sit on top of a saw table or workbench for wood to be passed through its loop or the unit can be swept over wood by hand. The Wood Scan Wizard retails for $135.00 and is available to retailers at $65.50.

The Wizard line of Woodworking metal detectors began shipping in July, 2001. According to Wizard Distribution CEO Billy Carmen, “The initial response has been overwhelming. We’re very happy to provide woodworkers with an inexpensive, effective means of preventing costly blade damage and shop down-time.”
